My Project

Our classroom is a self-contained special education classroom in metro Detroit for students with significant, multiple disabilities. With release from school programming approaching, our students are preparing for the responsibilities and demands of adulthood. How will they save and spend their money? How will they gain employment skills? Where will they live and how will they budget? What is a want vs. a need?

Our students are special needs high school and adult learners who learn financial literacy through our daily classroom store and jobs.

Each day, students earn money for different jobs in the classroom and school community. We discuss and practice saving and spending, depositing and withdrawing money, counting money, understanding budgeting and bills, the difference between wants and needs. This learning is absolutely critical as our students are high school and post-secondary adult learners who will need these skills right away. Real world application is the best way to teach these skills so we have developed a class store that is motivating and exciting each day! Currently, I pay for the items in our classroom store but the costs really add up. Having support in funding these motivating items would be a huge help in growing our classroom economy.
