Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the past, students have hyped up our class store, so I feel like the bar has been set. In our building students earn "Kestrel Cash" for things like following expectations, completing work, helping others, and so many other things! The students decide what we will earn cash for, how much they'll earn for each task, and how they will spend it. That's the fun part.
We set up, as a class, a class store, where students get to decide what they'll buy, the price of each item, and how many of each item will be for sale.
This establishes a class economy. Through this, my students take ownership of the items they can buy instead of me setting arbitrary prices. We also modify as we see is needed, so if we think something is overpriced compared to another item, we can modify prices as we see fit! My kids learn SO many valuable financial literacy and empathy-building skills through this process and best of all, it's student-driven learning! These lessons will stay with them throughout their life and will foster responsible, compassionate spenders in a global economy.
The best part is because my classroom has this store, while nobody else does, my students get to see how fortunate they are for these opportunities. As a result, many of them purchase items for their siblings, parents, or other students in the school. It helps build a grateful community member with a compassionate heart for those who don't have the same opportunities. I assess how much this has impacted them by a survey at the end of the year asking who has purchased something for someone else in our class store, who would they have liked to purchase something for, and how we could expand our community through the class store.
