My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population. Most of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrant children from a variety of South American countries. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is our goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all! Our school is a Title I (which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students) school.

Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.

Some of the students in my classes are special needs students who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language) and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.

My Project

It is my goal for my students to develop financial literacy skills. After discussing the importance of earning, investing and saving, our kiddos will have the opportunity to earn classroom money for things such as performing their class jobs, attending school on a daily basis, doing their homework, performing acts of kindness, and going above and beyond while meeting academic expectations. They will have access to the classroom online bank and will be given time to deposit and withdraw play money earned from their accounts. We will then establish a classroom store stocked and supplied with the requested supplies. Every week, the students will take turns running the classroom store while their classmates shop with the money they have earned. The students will use the money saved to purchase/invest in items such as pencils and snacks. The students will build their knowledge of financial literacy and strengthen their math skills by using the online bank accounts and mathematics manipulatives. They will print out account information and create a journal with financial data.

It is my hope that by engaging in this financial literacy unit of study, my students will learn the importance of earning, investing, and saving money.

My students will also take part in numerous activities/assignments throughout the school year that support financial literacy.
