Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a Westside Title 1 school with 95% free and approved lunch. Their life experiences consist mostly of home, school, and Mexico in the summer. I have been designing this financial literacy program - Economics in the classroom - for the past three years, including tying in leadership skills, environmental sustainability, and community/school support through mentorship of lower grade students (Trans-kindergarten).
My District 12 students (room name tied to the political system of Districts in CA) are sixth graders in an Elementary setting that have been developing their 21st Century life skills necessary to compete in our incredibly changing world of today.
Students are learning the relationship to performance to pay and the value of the dollar. These students' real-world experiences of today do not include paper cash handling, shopping at stores, saving plans, budgeting, nor basic monetary skill sets (with credit and Apple pay of today). Connecting real-world performance in the classroom to financial gain for providing your necessary and desired wishes is delivered to them through this interactive banking world.
My Project
The students receive a financial inheritance to begin their financial lessons and to purchase their basic supplies needed to do their academics. Items provided for this project are incentives for students to purchase as they proceed through the lessons.
Students are provided checkbooks and registers to maintain their accounts - debits for purchasing supplies, rent of their desk and credits for performing their classroom job and their academic assignments due daily.
Students can buy their desks, other student desks (rental income), sell items, auction items, loan money out with interest, and pay others to do their jobs. Real World successes and challenges.
