Help me give my students an opportunity to learn about financial literacy with items like bubbles, key chains, sports balls, slime, paddle ball games and ring pops.
My school is Title I and located in a small North Carolina town. It has a diverse population in which the majority of the students are economically disadvantaged. Almost half of my students are also learning English as their second language.
My students are full of enthusiasm for learning but often come to school without the necessary tools.
As their teacher, I want to provide them with all of the resources they need in order to learn and be successful.
My Project
My students need hands-on experiences in order to help them learn about financial literacy. The second-grade social studies curriculum includes a unit on economics. The students will be learning about things such as wants/needs, supply/demand, spending/saving, and scarcity.
I would like to provide my students with a fun and engaging way to learn about these topics.
The bubbles, key chains, sports balls, slime, paddleball games, and ring pops will be used to create a mock store situation. This will give my students the opportunity to learn about managing inventory, calculating costs, and determining prices. The students will be given the opportunity to earn cash throughout the week. On Fridays, they will have to decide whether or not they want to spend or save their cash. They will have to keep up with their own balances in order to know how much they have to spend each week.
