Help me give my students the life-changing experience of taking workshops with a professional filmmaker and editor as they produce videos about writers work and lives
My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak approximately 34 different languages among them!
Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.
Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager, and motivated students as their virtual Library Director, Creative Writing Teacher and Speaker Series Coordinator.
My Project
Filmmaker Chloe Cecil will visit our Guest Writers class to offer a series of presentations and workshops on filmmaking. Ms. Cecil will teach students about her experiences of shooting and editing independent films and documentaries, guiding students to do the same.
We will produce a series of videos together about the diverse authors who speak to our students in the Guest Writers series, making these films available on our website for all the enjoy.
During the pandemic, it is crucial to tap into the resources of the community and connect with artists such as Ms. Cecil, who has a wealth of experience to share. Students have requested the opportunity for this workshop. This is not an expertise that I possess, so I'm working hard to bring students the experience they desire. Student-centered learning is always most successful. This project is driven by students' curiosity and passion!
We will offer these presentations/workshop in the context of the Speaker Series and Guest Writers series. Ms. Cecil will help students interview authors and produce videos that others can watch!
We've had requests to bring Guest Writers to the screen, making it more accessible to all. In this program, we go “behind the book”–or behind the scenes—in the author’s writing process. We read and discuss books by diverse writers, meet the authors to ask questions, and hear a dramatic reading or performance of their poetry, fiction or memoir. Students facilitate the discussion, interviewing the authors, and guiding the whole event. The goal of this course is to investigate the human side of writing, and for students to imagine themselves as writers.
