Mrs. D. from Stamford CT is requesting Art Supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students black and white film and processing chemicals to continue their photographic journey in the darkroom.
My students are ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelth graders enrolled in a rural Northeast high school. Our school is a large public high school with nearly 2700 students.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with many of our students receiving free lunch.
Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Northeast.
The students I am primarily involved with are extremely creative and enrolled in the Visual Arts program at our school. I teach analog and digital photography where students are in need of new photography equipment due to our expanding program.
My photography students have the amazing opportunity of access to a darkroom at our school. When learning (and teaching) photography, this is an invaluable experience since it is a foundation skill to the medium and an important way to teach and learn how photography really works. Unfortunately, film photography can be rather expensive and our students are asked to purchase film and other supplies to help with the budget constraints. This year, more than ever, it feels our budgets and students are stretched so thin, that we have already used up our entire supply of 35 mm film and film developer. In order to keep the creative learning spirit alive in the darkroom, we are in need of more film and developer.
Traditional darkroom photography challenges students to understand the complexity of an image and how it’s created.
In the fast paced digital world we live in, this is often a gift and a moment of magic to embrace. For most of my students, their time in my class may be the only chance they have to experience photography in the darkroom. As an artist, photographer and educator, my hope is to continue the opportunity as long as possible. Allowing my students to experience this knowledge, technology, and history, can be best enriched with as many supplies and materials as possible.
