Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a teacher in the Entertainment and Media Academy at North Hollywood High School, I try to incorporate film into my curriculum when at all possible. After reading a great piece of literature such as Hamlet, Heart of Darkness, or Tess of the D'Urbervilles, it is very beneficial to my students to see the film version of the literature. Students who are English Language Learners may acquire a better understanding of the literature when it is experienced visually as well as intellectually. Great discussions on the differences between the book and film allow all students to use their critical thinking skills, and they can better understand an author's use of literary devices such as metaphor and motif when they see those devices represented throughout a film. It also proves to be a great educational experience to view several different versions of the same work to show the possibilities of different interpretations. For example, the "To Be or Not to Be" speech in Hamlet is entirely different in interpretation in the Gibson version as compared to the Branaugh version. To this end, I would like to build my classroom film library to include some of the great classics. Thank you for your consideration.
