Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is more to the world than our little corner. The weather doesn't just happen, the rest of the world influences our weather. Knowing what the weather conditions will be, helps make life easier.
The economy of our town is agriculture based.
The parents of my students either work in the fields or the canneries. The students are mostly english learners. We have one of the largest student populations for an elementary school in the district (950+). The school was build just after World War II and was remodeled about 15 years ago. Limited wi-fi was installed last year.
My Project
A weather station of this caliber will give the 6th grade students at the school an understanding of weather and climate beyond that of most people's. The students will be able to choose their clothing based on their weather classwork rather than a guess. Students will track temperature, barometric pressure, and wind direction in order to give the morning weather report for the school. The students will use math skills to compute weekly average temperature.
This project will give the students an opportunity to use their math and note-taking skills for a real world activity that will have meaning to their daily life.
By participating in the daily exercise of data gathering and reporting their findings the students will contribute to the learning of students through-out the school. Younger students will look forward to 6th grade because they will become the weather person for the school some day.
