Filling Young Minds & Empty Shelves

My students need good books, basic supplies, and fun lessons! I'm also requesting a variety of books for reluctant readers. Lastly, paper, markers and construction paper to allow for some creative expression.

My Students

Cardozo, established in 1928, is a beautiful school with incredible cultural significance. Run down and weary, it was given a second chance with some drastic renovations. Now, its students are being given a second chance, but still don't have the supplies they need.

This school is not only poverty-stricken, it has the lowest graduation rate in the entire District of Columbia.

With 30% English Language Learners and 69% African Americans, the cultural diversity is inspiring. But these students are used to low expectations and substandard resources.

My Project

I'm requesting some basic supplies to fill this classroom and create a nurturing environment where my students know that their success is of value and incredible importance. We don't have any class sets of books, so I'm requesting paper so that I can print short stories and poetry. I'm also requesting a variety of books for reluctant readers. Lastly, markers and construction paper to allow for some creative expression.

My students are incredible human beings with inspiring stories of overcoming hardships.

Their past education is no exception. They've been passed from school to school, from unmotivated teacher to uncaring teacher to no teacher at all. They deserve more than that. I believe that if they know they matter, if they know they deserve the best, that they have the potential to change the world for the better.
