Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with eager children. I currently teaching in a first and second high functioning autism class. I have seen my students grow so much this year. At the beginning of the year, my students really struggled with communication. Now they are able to communicate their wants and needs.
Six out of eight of my students are English Language Learners, attending a title 1 school.
My students come from low-income households with single parents. All of my students are minorities, but this does not limit them! My students are always reaching for the stars!
My Project
My students need to develop reading and writing skills. I selected reading intervention strategy activities such as the reading comprehension games library and the high-interest intervention reading folders to strengthen my students reading skills. I plan to use these activities during the same block. The students will be divided up into two groups based on their current reading levels. The students will practice the reading comprehension games with my paraprofessional, while I am able to teach my students how to close read utilizing the high-interest intervention folders.
The English Language Development Skill-Building Centers was chosen because 75% of my students are ELL and these centers will benefit all of my students in both reading and writing.
I will be rotating these activities throughout the week during my academic language development learning block. Monday, I will focus on building my students vocabulary. Tuesday, I will focus on reading comprehension using ELL strategies. Wednesday, I will focus on my students speaking and listening skills. Thursday, I will focus on the writing aspect of English Language Development. Friday, I will give my students the choice to show me what they know.
Finally, last but not least, the classroom magnetic letters kit and the tower of sight word games were selected to close the minor gaps that my students are missing. Two of my students are still working on c-v-c blends, so the magnetic letters will specifically benefit them. All of my students are working on their sight words, leading with a game mindset will increase the focus level of my students. I will have my students pull a block, read the sight word written on the block, spell the word written on the block, and use the word appropriately in a sentence.
