Imagine being a 4th grader who cannot read on grade level. In fact, you are on a 1st grade reading level. While everyone else is reading their long chapter books, you sit and read your short picture book and pray that no one notices.
I have a FABULOUS class of 22 fourth graders in Georgia.
We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. One child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together. I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in ability in my classroom, but all of my students can improve with the requested materials. Each child deserves the chance to be an active participant in their own learning.
I am requesting 2 Nook readers with covers and chargers. I envision my struggling readers being able to read their lower level books on the Nook without fear of being ridiculed by their peers. My students crave technology and I love giving them the chance to make learning fun. While my main motivation for requesting the materials is to help my struggling readers, ALL of my students would benefit from having these resources in our classroom.
nook [nook] –noun 1.
any secluded or obscure corner. 2. any small recess. 3. any remote or sheltered spot Many students have gaps in their learning. With the requested Nook readers, I can give these struggling readers the chance to fill in the gaps without fear of being ridiculed. Learning will literally be hands on for these students!
