Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you love to read? I do, and as a teacher it is my desire to develop that love for reading for all of the students that I teach. I want to give them so many opportunities to open books and fall into the character's lives, exciting them and inviting them to read more and more.

My students are fourth graders at an inner city public school in Pennsylvania.

I work with two classes teaching literacy. One class of students are mainly learning support students with many challenges facing them both academically and emotionally. The other class is students who are on grade level. However, all of these students are considered to be economically disadvantaged. Buying books, visiting a library is not a priority in their lives. Reading is a challenge to both student and parent. Many students do not have books at home. Our school is on a limited budget as well. Classroom libraries as well as guided reading materials are in a limited supply particularly for upper grade students in an elementary school.

My Project

As a literacy teacher, it is my responsibility to inspire my students to develop a life long love of reading. I want to have a rich classroom library with a variety of choices of books for students to read. Also, as I am working with students to develop and strengthen their reading skills, I want enriching, engaging books that would encourage students to read. Many of these students come from homes where education is not a top priority. It is my job as their teacher to try to inspire them to read and provide the reading materials to do so. My hope is that the books I have chosen will encourage my students to pick up a book and read. I want to give them the opportunity to be exposed to books and love reading as much as I do.

Right now, I am moving into a new classroom at a new grade level.

The classroom is empty of books. This project will help create a classroom library as well as provide some guided reading materials for my students. This project will give these students, many of whom are special needs the opportunity to read good quality literature on their reading level. A love of reading is so important to me. I love teaching students how to read. That is what this project will help me do for my students.
