My students are fourth graders at an inner city public school in Pennsylvania. I work with two classes teaching literacy. One class of students are mainly learning support students with many challenges facing them both academically and emotionally. The other class is students who are on grade level. However, all of these students are considered to be economically disadvantaged. Buying books, visiting a library is not a priority in their lives. Reading is a challenge to both student and parent. Many students do not have books at home. Our school is on a limited budget as well. Classroom libraries as well as guided reading materials are in a limited supply particularly for upper grade students in an elementary school.
