This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is a high poverty, Title I school in New York. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom.
They struggle personally and academically and have diverse needs. My class consists of general education students and children who receive special education services. Students living in homeless shelters, travel from other parts of the city to our school every day. Families that are new to the country (English New Language learners) have the added burden of learning to communicate in English. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are filled with energy, are happy, and motivated to learn. They are scientists, singers, mathematicians, leaders, comedians, readers, writers, teachers, dancers, me, and you; they are everything!
My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences, creative and challenging to prepare them for the future. I want my students to feel safe from the outside world, so they can focus on learning and simply being kids.
My Project
Moving up to second grade with my students has given me the chance to see them move from barely reading to reading EVERYTHING!
DORKS are welcome here!
My students absolutely love the Dork Diaries series; it's their top choice during free choice reading time. The main characters are funny and face some of the every day challenges that all children face at some point in their lives. We were lucky enough to get a few at the beginning of the year. In September, these books were way above my students' reading level, nevertheless, they were drawn to these books. They set reading goals and many of them are now able to read Dork Diaries independently. Because the children love them so, a few of our titles are missing in action.
Having the entire set of 15 titles will ensure that there is enough for them to share. We love Dorks having in our classroom!
