My students need diverse fairy tales to read, analyze, and share, so they improve their critical-thinking skills, reading and writing skills, cultural literacy, and creativity.
My classroom is a mirror image of my school: we celebrate diversity! I love teaching my diverse group of students, because we learn so much from each other. We learn about our similar and different cultures, beliefs, values, abilities, and needs which promotes empathy, caring, cooperation and respect among each other.
"My hope is for us to come together not only embracing shared beliefs and values, but acknowledging our differences in ways that promote respect and appreciation...If we are to emerge from the long shadows that can engulf us, we must talk with each other, come to understand each other, and renew ourselves and our perceptions of each other." (Alma Abdul-Hadi Jadallah)
This quote captures my beliefs and goals for my students, because my students live in poverty, single-parent homes, and/or are immigrants. I embed these life lessons into my language arts curriculum through writing and reading.
My students need much practice in reading and writing, since they read from one to five years below their grade level. My population consists of full inclusion of special education students and English language learners. All my students receive free breakfast and lunch meals daily.
My Project
This collection of fairy tales will enhance my students' creativity, imagination, and comprehension in reading and writing. Over my years of teaching, I have seen a decrease in students' ability to write and think critically and creatively. Many students do not understand the importance of studying elements of a story such as the setting, characterization, plot, problem and resolution. They also have difficulty imagining and creating ideas for fictional stories. They lack the skills to write narrative stories and read while analyzing the text. Fairy tales help to increase my students' confidence to read and write creatively.
This collection will be an extraordinary asset to enhance critical-thinking and collaboration among my students.
This collection has a combination of fractured fairy tales and tales from different cultures.
These books will allow small groups of students to read and analyze different versions of many classic fairy tales along with performing readers' theater with the stories. Students will also study the social injustice in fairy tales such as racism and stereotypes. These fairy tales are fun to read, easy to understand and teach cultural values and traditions. They are high-interest stories that will strengthen my students' critical thinking skills, imagination, writing skills, and get them more excited about reading!
