Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a wonderfully diverse group from all areas of the world. They are best described as spirited, creative, and curious pre-teens that are accepting of each other no matter their differences.
My students come from hard-working families; however, two-thirds of them qualify for free or reduced lunch and many of them are still developing English language skills.
Most come to school happy, anxious to learn, and ready to work. The best part of my job is seeing the progress the children make and the pride they have when they achieve something that they thought was "too hard".
My Project
Students will use fraction/decimal circles to manipulate solid examples of fractions, decimals. Often, fractions and decimals seem very abstract for fifth graders, but with actual models of these ideas, we can make it seem real to them...and with these materials, each student will have their own set of these valuable manipulatives.
It is often difficult to look at a picture and understand what is being asked, but a set of volume cubes and practice problems will make it easier to visualize the problems they are solving.
And, of course, it is also much more fun to move things around and build than it is to listen to your teacher or look at drawings! I would love to make math more enjoyable for my students!
