Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am working on increasing flexible seating, creating sensory-friendly environments, adding organization, and increasing classroom mobility in my classroom.

My goal is to create a dynamic learning environment by fostering student engagement, promoting well-being, and accommodating the diverse needs of students with Autism and Emotional Disabilities.

Increasing mobility can be achieved with an AV cart and utility cart for standing while working or swiftly evacuating a classroom for student safety. Furthermore, providing options for standing while working and facilitating collaboration through stations and projects fosters movement and engagement in learning activities. Adding speakers for music and audiobooks enhances the ambiance and can contribute to a positive learning atmosphere. A PA speaker will be used for events like open houses, field days, school festivals, and parent-teacher conferences.

Introducing lounge and gaming chairs will add seating options in our calm-down corner. Student self-regulation is essential to increasing time with general education peers. Having a space for students inside the classroom will reinforce use of skills and maximize instructional minutes.

Introducing a fridge and microwave to the classroom will encourage healthier eating habits and less focus on hunger pains, as well as accommodating special diets that require special storage due to doctor restrictions or allergies. Lastly, cold beverages promote hydration for essential cognitive function.

Students will also benefit from docking their laptops to a monitor to decrease eye strain. The monitor will also used as a station where the teacher and student can review content and assessments. Student laptop screens range from 12 to 13 inches.

Lastly, adding a ladder to my classroom will provide several benefits:

access to storage areas, ease of displaying student work, increase use of vertical space, repurposed as a manipulative/teaching tool to discuss concepts related to height, and increased safety when decorating the classroom or installing light filters.
