I am a teacher of German at Clay Middle School in Carmel, Indiana. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade German. I would like to take my 87 students on a field trip to the Athenaeum in Indianapolis. We will learn about the German influence and German roots right here in Indianapolis, how the German immigrants created this structure to socialize in familiar surroundings with friends and family of similar backgrounds.The ideals of exercise, culture, good food, and conversation were motivating factors in creating this building and are carried on today with the work of the YMCA, the Rathskeller Restaurant, the American Cabaret Theatre, and the other numerous groups who meet at the Athenaeum for study and celebrations. Students will learn about the interior and exterior architectural features of the building as well. While at the Athenaeum at the conclusion of the tour, I would like the students to have the opportunity to enjoy lunch in the Kellersaal Restaurant. Being able to eat at the restaurant, the students will be able to savor the flavor of a German meal in an authentic environment while realizing there are opportunities to have an international experience right here in Indianapolis. I have inquired at the Athenaeum Rathskeller Restaurant about the cost of eating with my group of students. In spite of pleading with the proprietor for a reduced cost and a more modest meal, this request has not been considered, so I would like to subsidize each student's meal at $4.00 per person.
