My Students

Students at our school are excited about Science. They don't have the opportunity to visit many places for field trips due to extreme funding cutbacks. Hands-on learning and inspiration often takes place outside the regular classroom.

Our students are very hard-working and caring.

They attend a Title I school that is comprised of 68% requiring free or reduced lunch. Our student population is about 60% Hispanic, 20% Asian, and 15% Caucasian. Although we live only 4 miles from the beach, a vast majority of them have not even seen it!

My Project

We are requesting a donation to pay for the bus ride up to Pasadena, CA and back. We are so lucky to have a NASA facility only 50 miles away. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory provides free tours of their facility to students. We study the solar system in depth in our Earth Science curriculum. In light of the recent Mars Science Laboratory and NASA's Rover Curiosity studying the Red Planet, it is an exciting time for students to see where the mission was conceived. Our students will take a 2-hour extensive tour of the campus at JPL, look at mock-ups of the robots NASA has sent to Mars, talk with engineers and scientists. This is an inspiring field trip for our future NASA scientists.

The kids at our school don't have the means to visit something as exciting as a NASA center probably ever in their lives.

Imagine the excitement when they can come home and say they met a person responsible for moving the camera around on a robot on Mars?! This field trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of these kids and is something that will inspire them to pursue a future career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.
