Kids are natural-born engineers! Do you remember methodically taking apart a Tupperware drawer as a child? My job as a School Library Media Specialist is not only to foster a love of reading in the early childhood setting but to also develop divergent thinking and imagination. After my students check out a library book they are given the opportunity to enjoy interactive displays throughout the space. I’d like to offer my student's a curated selection of STEM toys in the library to use during their free choice time.
Shh…don’t tell the kids that building, fidgeting, and tinkering with these toys will stimulate creative thinking, and develop problem-solving skills using creativity, collaborative work, and logic!
We’ll just let them enjoy the satisfying click made by two magnetic tiles connecting and watch them work together to create patterns, structures, and imaginative creatures. Having more discs/blocks/sticks lets more kids join in on the fun and go bigger with their creations. Because these building toys are open-ended, require creativity, and can be used in many different ways they have more staying power. My students will never get bored! The storage bins will allow for quick and easy cleanup.
