Fidgets and Movement Tools to Improve Focus

Help me give my students sensory and movement items such as bouncy bands and wobble chair feet that will allow them to fidget in class but still participate and learn.

My Project

My students may all come from different backgrounds, are of different ages, have various abilities, and like different things. One thing they have in common is that they like to move! If you were to come and watch a lesson, it would look like I was teaching a class about popping popcorn kernels. They are in constant motion and I have grown to love that about them.

Giving them fidgets and other movement tools will teach them to channel their energy and help them focus.

This is a skill that they can actually learn to use as they get older. So often my students don't fit the mold of someone who can sit still at their desks for extended periods of time. That's okay! They can learn to focus their movement on one part of their body like a hand or their feet and still get the sensory input or output they need. They will be able to focus better and will be able to participate more fully in their classrooms.

For this project, I have chosen a variety of sensory and fidget items that I know will engage all of my students in one way or another. I have small items, like infinity cubes or stress balls, that can easily be used by my students that don't like to draw attention to themselves but still have some excess energy they need to get out. I also have other more physical items like the wobble seats and wobble feet for chairs that will give some students a chance to move in a way that is appropriate for the classroom. Some people look at these things as toys that are unnecessary, but in all honesty, they are tools that will help my non-neurotypical students thrive.
