Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach elementary and middle school students in an urban school. My students are full of energy, creativity and talent.
My students love music!
I teach in an area with a lot of economic hardship which limits my students’ access to instruments, private lessons and technology It in no way limits their love of music and potential to compose and perform. They truly enjoy playing all the instruments in the classroom, learning to sing and play their favorite songs and write their own music.
My Project
Children have a natural need to wiggle and jiggle and the regular school day calls for a lot of sitting still. Fortunately, music class can be a great outlet for students' need to move and groove. I teach lots of songs and activities with movement but for some students, it isn't enough. While I am happy to let the students who need to move keep on moving, problems arise when students have trouble managing their personal space. Once the movement activity isn't structured, some students struggle with boundaries and end up disrupting their nearby peers.
Fidget toys and alternative seating can help students manage their need to wiggle and jiggle while still maintaining personal space boundaries.
Some students just need a little fidget toy to keep their hands busy while they are singing; others need seating options that allow for more whole body movement. These tools can be especially helpful for special needs students and students with ADHD. For some of these special students, the need to move is beyond their control; they just need to move! Tools like these can help them do so in a controlled way that won't disrupt their peers.
Help me provide movement options for students that will allow them to fidget, wiggle and jiggle as needed without disrupting their peers. I want to make music class enjoyable and fun for all of my students, fidget singers included!
