I am the media coordinator for Ayden-Grifton High School, serving grades 9-12. The goal of this project is to increase our fiction collection of books by adding additional titles to the existing collection. We would appreciate any donation amount.
The objective of the project is to get our student body excited about reading. Our strategy is to acquire books that motivate students to read. We will accomplish this by looking at book reviews, seeking student input and collaborating with teachers.
Currently, we have only 1777 fiction books for our students to read. Having an enrollment of 646 students, this means there is only 3 fiction books per student at our school. We have a total of 5,845 books, which is below recommendations.
It is hoped that by encouraging students to read, student proficiency will increase. The students at our school scored 69.2% proficiency in the accountability module set up by the State of North Carolina. Although we have made steady gains in growth over the years, we still have much work to do.
Encouraging students to read is a strategy we are using to improve student performance. All subject areas, including math, involve the ability of students to read. Our weakest area last year was in writing, with scores of 39.4% and 45.7%. As performance in reading and writing are closely aligned, this reflects the need for our students to be better readers.
Activities to stimulate reading will include a before-school book club, teacher assignments with the books and an advertising campaign to promote media services.
This project is extremely important because there are many poor students in the school who can not afford to purchase their own books. These students are the same ones who will probably never enter a public library and do not have access to reading material outside of the school. We want to provide our students with all they need to be successful. Of the 646 students enrolled at Ayden-Grifton, there are 340 males students (53%) and 306 female students (47%). There are 281 black students (44%), 32 Hispanic students (5%) and 333 Caucasian students (51%). There are 53 (8%) migrant students. Eighty-five (13%) of our students are classified as exceptional and receive services due to problems that impede their learning.
Thank you in advance for supporting the education of our youth.
