Ceramics class is not just a class but a home to a variety of innovative and thoughtful students. My students are high academic achievers and ceramics is a place to stretch and explore their creativity while getting their hands dirty. In high school, clay gives students an outlet for expression, and a safe place to stretch and explore. So many of my students fall in love with the process and community cultivated in the studio. They collaborate, support each other, create every day and they learn: there is no pride greater than the visual representation of their idea.
My Project
Our students love throwing on the pottery wheel but unfortunately all students do not have access to a wheel due to lack of functional wheels. The wheel is a core component of a ceramics class, serving as a vessel for students to exercise their creativity or imagination. Students enjoy working with clay as a form of stress management and community building. Unfortunately many of our wheels need to be replaced, leading to the loss of this fundamental element of ceramics.
A new wheel is an investment in current and future students!
There is no available funding to replace rusting and damaged wheels. The life span of a pottery wheel is at least 20 years; in a typical year 150 students will use the ceramics room for assignments and explorations.
With the addition of a new wheel more students can create bowls, vases, mugs, containers, platters and abstract sculptures but most importantly they will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and play, an option that is scarce in this day and age.
