Felt to the Rescue

My students need felt board stories and felt to bring stories to life and make visual connections to help them sequence and retell stories.

My Students

Do you remember when you were a student, a teacher sat at the front of the classroom and read a book and you just looked at the pictures? The teacher would then ask you to retell what you just heard and you had absolutely No clue. The same goes for my students.

My students come from many different backgrounds and home situations.

I teach two half-day kindergarten classes in Nevada. My students only attend school for 2 ½ hours each day. They come to school each day with the desire to learn and a desire to be taught. Some students come into school recognizing all their letters and sounds, while some come in never holding a pencil or seeing a book.

My Project

I am trying to make reading fun and interactive. Students Do love to listen to stories, but not all stories are interesting. By using the felt stories, I will be able to bring the book to life. Students will be able to see how a story is sequenced when a piece of the story is added to the felt board. Students will be able to retell the story themselves by coming up and placing the felt pieces on the board, this will empower the students to learn. A Chinese proverb states: "Tell me, I’ll forget; Show me, I’ll remember; Involve me, I’ll understand." I want to involve all my students so they will be able to learn.

It is my goal for my students to succeed and to achieve their highest potential, so they will continue coming to school and having the best learning experience possible.
