Fifth graders are a feisty bunch! Some are 10 going on 7, while others are 10 going on 15! As a member of the fifth grade team at a fantastic public charter school in a high needs community, it is my job to make sure that we have appropriately leveled and engaging books for ALL of our fifth graders.
When our fifth graders enter our school in August, we quickly assess their reading levels. As is usual at our school, our fifth graders ranged from the kindergarten-first grade level all the way to the high school level, with most falling in the second to fourth grade level. No matter where they start, it is our school's mission to get ALL of them reading at grade level or higher and prepared for excellent high schools when they leave our school in the eighth grade. So we've got our work cut out for us, but we know our kids can do this.
As our students have become used to the expectation that they READ, they are quickly moving through the selection of books we have in our school library.
I have requested 50 titles (including a boxed set) of books we KNOW our fifth graders will love to read. Since they are required to have 2 books in their possession at all times, our students need to have access to as many great books as possible.
With your generous support, we will markedly increase the number of books in our library which are appropriate for our fifth graders. And as they read more and more, we know that their reading will improve so that when they complete their year as feisty fifth graders, they will be prepared for success in the sixth grade!
