My Students

I teach preschool for children in a high poverty area. All of my students are low income and at high risk. I have several students who have open DCFS cases.

I have a very culturally diverse classroom this year.

Six out of 18 of my students are Spanish speaking.

What I love most about my children is how caring they are. Even though some of these children come from bad circumstances at home, in the classroom they are caring and loving to their classmates as well as their teachers! I love being able to see their big hearts shine through their personalities.

My Project

Sensory play is a great way to facilitate exploration and encourage children to use investigative skills while having fun! This is why my donor project includes a lot of sensory items for my preschoolers!

Sensory play supports many skills for young children, such as language development, cognitive development, fine and gross motor skills, and social interaction.

It is also a great way to calm down children who are frustrated and need time to themselves.

I will use the items on my donor list to create a classroom for my preschoolers that provides with them several resources to be successful in developing these skills. The reusable writing pockets will be used to teach students how to write their names. The water building blocks will be used in the water table to enhance imagination and the use of fine motor skills. The sensory dough will be used as a small group activity for children to learn about their senses (ex: what does it look like? What does it feel like? Does it have a smell?) The thing I’m most looking forward to is the draw and write touch board! This will allow me to teach children to write letters in their name while using fine motor skills by only writing with one finger.
