This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the Math Intervention teacher servicing Grades K - 3. I provide kids who are struggling to meet proficiency, receive additional support through intensive targeted instruction. The student demographic is almost all Latino, with a small population of Asians. We are Title I. The kids get free lunch during school and then take home a bag of food that qualifies as their supper for the evening and their breakfast for the following day. A majority of our parents do not speak English. Most families have both parents working full time. The kids have limited access to educational support in their home environment and little access to educational tools to assist their academic progress.

My Project

The magnetic Base Ten Blocks provide hands-on ways for students to learn place value, number concepts, and operations. They help students physically represent what they're learning so they can develop conceptual understanding of the meaning of each concept. Students are especially able to ease into the concept of regrouping/renaming up to three-digit addition and subtraction. Both the teacher and the students can demonstrate thinking processes using the magnetic blocks on the class white board while engaging in discourse. To reward our students for their efforts, they will earn pencils for their perseverance.
