Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As a middle school counselor, I see and smell first hand the growing pains associated with teenage boys and girls. Our students are busy focusing on being academically successful and tend to forget personal hygiene. Some of our students are also living in home environments where they are subjected to parents who smoke, which causes this smell to linger in their clothes.

It breaks my heart to hear students tell me that they want to attend school but they are afraid of being teased or ridiculed by peers for the trapped smells in their clothing.

In middle school, students are often overwhelmed with the newest of responsibilities that come with the transition to middle school, like keeping up with homework assignments, being on time for the bus, etc. Often choosing an outfit takes a backseat. While many of our students are often left to get dressed and on the bus without parents being home, they often will pick up whatever garment is close and/or makes them feel comfortable. This might mean, simply putting on what they wore the day before. Many of our students do not have the luxury of parents who lay out their clothes or assist them with getting dressed.

For us this means a student may wear an article of clothing that needs washing. For the student, it means teasing and shaming by peers. For me, this is heartbreaking.

It would mean the world to our Middle School to be able to provide a new, clean outfit to our students in need.
