I teach in a middle school in Louisiana in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina. I teach PE to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. This is our third year participating in the President's Challenge. The President's Challenge is a fitness program that encourages our children to be active and try to improve their overall health. This program helps assess the current fitness level of our middle school children and encourages them to continue to stay active in and out of school. The Physical Fitness Program includes five components that measure muscular strength, cardio respiratory endurance, speed, agility and flexibility. We test the students twice a year in the hope of seeing improvement during the spring testing. We have always given certificates and T-Shirts to the children depending on the area of achievement they have met. This year funding has been cut because of the hurricane. We are going to continue to test the students, but need help supplying the awards/T-Shirts. Our school population is about 800 students. We would like to give an award to those students who score at or above the 50th percentile on all five events-but fall below the 85th percentile in one or more of the events. In honor of our students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness, we would like to give them the Presidential award along with the Presidential Fitness T-Shirt. Boys and girls who score at or above the 85th percentile on all five events would receive this honor. We would like to give participant awards to all other students who did the test, but did not meet the National or Presidential level of fitness. The five events in this program are: curl-ups, shuttle run, mile run, right angle push-ups, and the V-Sit Reach. We discuss with the students how each component is performed before testing. We incorporate activities into our PE program to help improve areas that they may be weak in. Our main goal is for our students to understand the importance of a physically active lifestyle. The hurricane has changed many of our lives. We are hoping to get back to some normalcy by continuing with our fitness program. Our older students want to continue the testing to see if they have improved and our younger students want to do the test because it is something new for them. Please consider this project for funding. It is a great way for us, as physical education teachers, to encourage our students to stay active. They also find that fitness can be fun! Thank you!
