Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mathematics - the unshaken Foundation of Sciences, and the plentiful Fountain of Advantage to human affairs. ~Isaac Barrow
My students come from a high poverty neighborhood with a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military to name a few.
With such diversity, it is to be expected that each student is going to have a very divergent range of personal, social, emotional, and educational needs when compared to schools that serve a more homogeneous population. This aside, they are just children and need to have fun, and laugh, question, explore, create, and interact with each other in an effort to develop the knowledge and social skills needed to be successful individuals. My students are very interested in technology...math and science not so much. I feel that by using current technological trends as a means to enhance mathematics and science concepts my students will become more interested and engaged in the learning process.
My Project
Feelin' Hot Hot HOT about Math and Science has the potential to grab the attention of struggling students and inspire them to participate in vocabulary, math, and science activities through the use of Hot Dots technology. Hot Dots turns ordinary flash cards into individualized basic skills tutors. Students will use the Hot Dots pen with various curricular cards to review independently, or in cross grade level groups. The cards requested will be used to enhance higher order thinking skills, such as deductive reasoning, and STEM concepts. The plastic storage case included also makes these great send-home helpers for those students needing additional academic support. The importance of showing students alternative ways to learn, independently and collaboratively, is one of the most valuable lessons I can provide to my students. By taking interest in their own learning, using hands on Hot Dots activities, students are more likely to process and retain information.
These children deserve the same opportunity to learn through advanced technology as those from more affluent areas.
My goal is to expose these kids to technology from an educational perspective so that they gain the tools they need to use computers and mathematics as a means to advance through life.
Your contributions are much more than a donation they are gifts of knowledge that will be unwrapped daily.
