This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it feels like to create music by playing a drum in a group. It's an exhilarating, powerful, and bonding experience. My students experience playing drums in a circle but, are constantly being interrupted by stopping to let another student have a turn just when they get started they have to stop.

I have the honor of teaching K-5 Music at an Elementary in Nevada for over 900 students.

Almost all of my students live below poverty level and receive free breakfast and lunch daily. My schools ethnicity is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian (White) and 1% Asian. Close to 70% of these students are learning English as a second language. My young students deal with a hard, poverty stricken reality that most adults would not be able to handle. Coming to school should not be yet another place where they have to "do without". Having simple luxuries like pencils and paper are becoming scarce in our school. And in order for my students to have the proper skills to create music they need to have instruments to create with. Only then will they be able to open themselves up and allow themselves to dream and create without boundaries.

My Project

Children's Music is such a powerful tool for children and it benefits their whole being; mind, body and soul. Drumming is a powerful outlet that is physically active and makes for a strong body. When kids have a hobby such as drumming they are no longer sitting in front of the TV, playing video games or the computer for hours on end. Drumming exercises the brain as it learns new tasks. It also exercises the memory, which helps to increase the ability to remember. This may lead to less worry of forgetfulness as a child ages. It also boosts a child's morale, since it makes them be part of a team. Having and wanting to practice will teach children self-motivation and responsibility. It is a safe, effective way for a child to release his or her emotions in a constructive way as opposed to a destructive way. Drumming gives a sense of security, discipline, endurance and patience. It increases hand eye coordination and that is something that is used all throughout life. I need 3 Tubano drums for my class.

With the musical skills children can learn through drumming, the sky is the limit.

Starting in a large group setting allows students to take risks and to create without worrying what another student might think. With these Tubano drums my students can be mobile with their talents. My students will not only create and share within the walls of the music room, but they can share their talents with the school by having performances showcasing their great talents.
