Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in the South Bronx, one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. The school's population is about 320 and the majority qualify for free lunch. My students are mainly Hispanic, African-American, African, and West Indian.
A large amount of my students live in single parent households, and some are also living in neighborhood shelters or in foster care.
Despite their many challenges in life, they are hard working, energetic, talented, and resilient young people eager to learn new things.
My Project
My students need healthy snacks and some personal supplies such as clean t-shirts, tooth paste, and hand sanitizer. My students are very resilient, but often so many of them come to school hungry and without basic supplies to really help them thrive throughout the day. Healthy snacks, clean T-shirts, and basic sanitary supplies will definitely help boost their energy, help them focus better in class, and improve their self-esteem overall! During these warmer months especially, students are really exerting a lot more energy and sweating while playing in gym and outdoors. These items will surely come in handy to not only offer them nutrition, but items they may need to help them maintain great hygiene throughout the day!
