My Students

My students do not have a love for reading - yet. The books in the school district are not the newest nor the most interesting books, and I want to prove to my scholars that reading is both greatly enjoyable and something that will make them better students and citizens.

My 7th grade students are phenomenal.

They are hard working and high energy, but they attend a school which has numerous distractions. They are the youngest students in a 7-12 high school and are in danger of straying off the path of success they are currently walking. They want to learn, but they also see older students roaming the halls, skipping class, joining gangs, and selling drugs. It is my goal to keep these kids out of trouble and show them that reading can be fun, and show them that learning can be an enjoyable experience that they can do on their own. Having the ability to read and write is essential for them to experience success in school and stay off of our dangerous streets. Most of my students are low-income, and they come from a very urban setting in Missouri. They are part of a very diverse neighborhood and school, with a high population of Somali, Haitian, Middle Eastern, Kenyan, American, and Latino students.

My Project

Showing my students a book like The Hunger Games will get them excited about reading. Very few of our students read outside of school because nobody at home is making them do it. Few teachers at my school assign homework anymore because they believe it won't be turned in and don't want to challenge the students. I want to use this book in my classroom to make them WANT to read outside of school. Because this book is such an exciting, adventurous and compelling read, I know it can get my students to unknown heights. The majority of students in my school and district are performing below grade level, and it is due largely to reading and comprehension issues. Exciting books that are relevant to their lives and not from the 1960s is an excellent way to make them practice and learn without them even realizing what they're doing - because it's fun!

Please help make a difference in my students' lives.

They are fantastic individuals who have faced more adversity than I could ever have imagined prior to working in my school. Help me show these students how much fun learning can be and how enjoyable reading a good book is. My students and I will forever be in your debt for your gracious donations and contributions!
