My 7th grade students are phenomenal. They are hard working and high energy, but they attend a school which has numerous distractions. They are the youngest students in a 7-12 high school and are in danger of straying off the path of success they are currently walking. They want to learn, but they also see older students roaming the halls, skipping class, joining gangs, and selling drugs. It is my goal to keep these kids out of trouble and show them that reading can be fun, and show them that learning can be an enjoyable experience that they can do on their own. Having the ability to read and write is essential for them to experience success in school and stay off of our dangerous streets. Most of my students are low-income, and they come from a very urban setting in Missouri. They are part of a very diverse neighborhood and school, with a high population of Somali, Haitian, Middle Eastern, Kenyan, American, and Latino students.
