This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school opened in 2005 with the goal of providing a safe and accepting environment for all students.
My school is a place where it’s okay to be black, white, LGBTQ, straight, gothic, Buddhist, Christian, or just plain unique!
While each student is unique, the one thing all my students have in common is that they want to graduate high school and go on to be successful in college or a career. Many of my students face obstacles to being successful in school. And, for those who go on to college, many will be first-generation, college students. The teachers and staff at AHS try to support our students in reaching their goals however we can.
My Project
Over 80% of my students are food insecure and live in poverty. Over 15% of my students are homeless with many living on their own; without adult support. These students come to school because it is a refuge from their daily lives. For many, it is the main source of their daily food intake. Students come into my office looking for additional food to take home (oftentimes to share with younger siblings). While I can provide information on community, meal sites and how to apply for food assistance, sometimes my students just need something to eat at the moment. By funding this project, you are helping me help them.
