My school is creating a tiered approach to support students in increasing their attendance. We are creating a Breakfast Club, to encourage students to come to school on Monday mornings as well as a monthly gift card drawing for those with exemplary attendance. As the School Social Worker, I work with students and families on an individual basis to increase motivation and help them access community resources to mitigate barriers to attendance. This project specifically targets students who have a hard time staying until the end of the day on Fridays. During the last block of the day, I will go to each classroom to deliver the snacks to all students as well as offer praise and encouragement. A snack may seem trivial to some, but the little extras we can provide our students can really help some students stay motivated to finish out the week strong.
