Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Teach for America Corps member at a low-performing public middle school in Washington Heights, New York. Washington Heights is a neighborhood stricken by poverty and drug trafficking, and 99% of my students are eligible for free lunches. I recently came across a wonderful book called "Chew on This." It is co-written by Eric Schlosser, the author of "Fast Food Nation," and it talks about the fast-food industry and its effects on one's health, the economy, and the environment. As with "Fast Food Nation," Schlosser balances "gross out" facts with compelling information and personal stories. In this adaptation, he also quotes kids about their experiences and opinions. I want my students to read this book so that they can make informed choices about their food consumption. Unfortunately, many of my students are overweight, and their social consciousness is slim to non-existent. I hope that by reading this book, my students will begin to think about how their personal choices can affect not only their bodies, but also the world around them.
