Farts Takeover the Library!

Help me give my students curiosity with our classroom library by featuring books about farts, displayed on a glowing green bookshelf.

My Project

My 3rd graders have made significant gains in language arts this year. Due to Covid related modifications to education in the past couple of years, many lacked foundational skills. Side by side we have worked together for almost 100 days and the data shows that some have made more than a year's gain already. Their progress is hard-earned and well-deserved. I couldn't be more proud!

However, some of my students, despite their gains, have not yet grasped the concept of reading for pleasure.

What better than a topic they won't stop talking about? Farts I think this topic will entice my most reluctant readers to visit my library. Books like Dog Farts, Ninja Farts, and Brain Farts will gain the interest of fiction readers. Hopefully, that hooks them! Then I can recommend a possible "next read." For example, if the student liked Dog Farts then he might like Dog Man which is slightly more rigorous (which is probably why he didn't pick it up before now). But with the confidence of finishing Dog Farts and actually being entertained by it, he might not be as reluctant. He might want to read it!

For the students who prefer nonfiction, I plan to offer books like farty facts and The Science Behind Farts. If they enjoy those then I could suggest the National Geographic section or Ripley's Believe It or Not! These high-interest books can create a gateway into reading.

To make these books stand out from the rest of the library I will display them on a tiered acrylic LED shelf using book stands. It will sit on the cabinet of our library and it will glow green to compliment the fart books. The impact of this project creates confidence and engagement, necessary skills for lifelong readers!
