Farm to Table Gardening Project

My Project

Moving our school to an environmental science program means creating cross disciplinary projects. Our farm to table gardening is a great example. Our environmental science classes along with our culinary classes will work together to clean out and restore our Garden Center. With the use of 6 raised bed areas, our students will start a vegetable and herb garden. The things they choose to grow will not only be used for our culinary classes but it will also be used to help feed our 4 Gopher Tortoises that live in a preserve on our school property.

Teaching kids these gardening skills can directly transfer to their home lives, as well as, setting them up for a greener future.

Sustainability is one of our overarching concepts at SSM. Providing students with the tools they need to learn how to become more environmentally aware is our task.

This project not only allows our culinary and environmental science students to work together but also supports our Specialized Varying Exceptionality students. Using the garden and the vegetables that ultimately come from it, we will be able to support the teaching of daily life skills to these students.
