Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have special needs and love to learn. Many of my students come from low-income families and live in apartments as well as being English Language Learners. This year we have started to build a community among my students, their parents and myself by creating a school garden and working together one Saturday a month to grow healthy vegetables and fruits.
Many of my students struggle with healthy eating and weight.
They have not learned the nutritional value in fresh vegetables and that they can taste amazing if cooked properly. I am hoping that this project will give them life long skills in properly preparing meals at home that are cost effective as well as nutritious.
My Project
My students have worked very hard over the past couple of years to create an amazing garden that they use to produce quality vegetables 9 months out of the year.
I would like my students to learn how to cook with the vegetables that they grow so that they can learn the science behind the cooking as well as healthy eating.
I am asking for a Instant Pot because our school day is only 6 hours and it takes a while to cook some of the vegetables. By using an Instant Pot it allows the students time to harvest, prepare and cook the produce fresh from the garden and be able to taste it before they leave for home. In the fall we will be making soup from the butternut squash that they grow. Having an immersion mixer makes it easier to blend the veggies without making a mess like a blender would.
I think it's important for students to experience how easy it is to air fry food rather than to soak them in hot unhealthy oil so I am requesting an air fryer.
Cooking has a lot to do with measurement and math so I am asking for measuring spoons and cups so that my students will be able to learn their measurements by actually measuring the ingredients. In the spring I like to have the students make cookies as a reward doing their best for state testing. Having a mixer will be beneficial for this to ensure that all of the ingredients are well mixed.
The main goal of this project is for my students to learn how to prepare tasty meals from the healthy produce that they have grown.
