Fantastic Foundational Phonics!

Help me give my students Fundations Standard Sound Cards for the extra phonetics support they need! Without the mastery of sound and spelling patterns, students often struggle with literacy!

My Students

My school is located in West Cobb County in Kennesaw, Georgia. Since the school's inception, the diversity and demographic of our school continues to change. Our students come from various homes situations and include both students from upper middle class homes and students who live in hotels, making the classrooms quite diverse.

I am blessed with a wonderfully unique and diverse group of second grade learners.

This grade level is a unique year for students. Second grade is a time when students are becoming more and more independent, but the learners still require quite a bit of teacher support. It is my belief that this grade level is a critical time for building student responsibility, organization, self-esteem and intrinsic motivation.

My Project

As a 2nd grade educator, I have noticed that if students don't have a firm grasp of their phonics skills, then it becomes more difficult for them to read fluently, spell, and even write. Using the Fundations Phonics cards and the program has proven to strengthen phonetics in students, making them stronger readers!

Why Fundations Phonics Cards?

Basically, they help students with learning the relationship between sounds and their spellings. Students need knowledge of these most common sound to spelling relationships so that they can decode words they are unfamiliar with when reading.

I am a firm believer that a stringent and explicit phonics program needs to be in place for students K-2 so that they can master their sounds and spelling patterns. Wilson Learning has a tried and true sequential system of teaching phonics called Fundations. A description of this program that was taken form the Wilson learning Website is a good descriptor of the program:

"As a recognized leader in multisensory, structured language programs, Wilson® brings more than a decade of systematic and explicit instruction to the K-3 classroom. Based on the Wilson Reading System® principles, Wilson Fundations® provides research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program."

Because of its effectiveness and the research behind it, I would love for my 2nd grade team to have the phonics cards so that we can ensure a rigorous, explicit approach for teaching the foundational skill of phonics to our students.
