I have 30 awesome students who vary tremendously in their abilities and interests. I try to present the fifth grade core content in a way that gets them excited to learn while allowing them to be confident and successful. My students love learning when they are able to have hands-on experiences to discover the reasons behind phenomena they see in the world around them.
My students are enthusiastic to learn despite the many challenges they face.
The school I teach at is located in a low income area. My school was 1% away from being qualified as a Title l so we do not receive extra funding and resources for being low income. With a lack of funding, it is extremely difficult to provide the exciting and challenging opportunities that my students need to improve.
My Project
My students have been learning how to code this year. We are lucky to be able to have several Sphero Minis and Dash and Dot robots in our classroom. Unfortunately, I only have one iPad so we are not able to use the robots unless we find other teachers who will let us borrow their iPads.
My students would be able to code more often if we had devices in our own classroom.
Recently my students worked on a challenge to get a robot through a maze. I loved the teamwork and perseverance that was displayed as my students were working on this task. The students were so excited when they completed the task. I want to be able to create tasks like this more often. With the Kindle Fires, I will also be able to find ways to utilize them in helping with math, reading, and science.
