This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Per Horace Mann, "Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men..." My goal is to provide educational opportunities to students so that they may learn something today that will increase their competitiveness in tomorrow's global economy.

This magnet school engages students in rigorous academic and career-related curriculum.

The school serves a diverse student population of 474 students with ethnic representation as follows: African American, 26.6%; Hispanic, 69.4%; White, 2.1%; Asian, 1.5%; and Multi-Racial, 0.4%. Approximately 78% of the students are on Free or Reduced lunch, and many of our students will be first-generation college students. Approximately 94% of our students experience AP courses during high school. A similar percentage engage in dual credit opportunities on and/or off-campus before graduation. Our parents appreciate the advantages that education affords, however many of them lack the ability to share personal experiences to guide students in making decisions regarding understanding fiscal responsibility; accessing and managing college debt; establishing and maintaining good credit; developing college and career readiness skills; and navigating the corporate environment in a global economy.

My Project

Students who apply to this magnet school have an expressed interest in the areas of business, marketing, and technology. All students are introduced to a coherent sequence of courses beginning their freshman year. Students select a graduation program, that includes a specific career path that mimics coursework students will see in college. In fact, many of our vocational classes are classified as dual credit. One of the pathways that the students can select is Accounting and Finance. These students take classes in accounting and banking. Next year, we will add new classes -- personal finance and financial analysis. The students will use the financial calculators to solve various problems involving debt and investment analysis in their financial analysis class.

One of the core beliefs of my school district is: "Effective instruction makes the most difference in student academic performance." Effective instruction begins with a solid curriculum and a plan of delivery.

This gift will give each student equal access to technology in our financial analysis class. The students have never had financial calculators available to them. This will give them a chance to create a new skill, making them more competitive when entering the workplace.
