Fantastic Fiction for Fifth Graders: Walk Two Moons

My students need 30 copies of "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech and 1 audio book copy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading below grade level means that many of my students can't check out great literature in the school library. My fantastic fifth graders read from early 3rd to 10th grade in one classroom. One of the ways to raise the reading level and keep the advanced readers engaged is to run book clubs.

My students love the choice of book clubs, whatever their level.

When they read with mixed ability small groups everybody benefits. When they story board, discuss their ideas and take provocative notes, they love reading. And, they even write well in response! These fifth graders are in a low socio-economic, program improvement district. Many come from hard working families who struggle to get by. My school values literacy but cannot invest in classroom libraries. I am teaching a very wide range of abilities and want the best for each of my students.

My Project

The last time one of my book orders arrived, the kids were up to the bins before the morning bell rang. "Hey, you'd think I put out chocolates! Scoot back to your seats -- you can choose your books during reading today!" I laughed. What is magical about whole class reads is that we can compare story boards, have grand discussions relating the book to our lives, and I can front load the vocabulary. The readers who have a lower AR level take great pride in reading a book on grade level. With the class set of books I am requesting, we will visit the award winning author's web site, Sharon Creech. We will set up our triple story board for the challenge of tracking a multiple plot line (5th grade standard). I'll choose scenes from Walk Two Moons to listen to on the CD and follow the text on the document camera, for multi--modal reading. Team clubs will make character posters, turn their sticky note responses into a "best quote of the novel" contest. Clubs will do readers' theater, and of course, some will find more Sharon Creech.

Shared reading and writing is proven to be the most help to English language learners.

Multi-modal instruction benefits the struggling readers the most. Our classroom environment of respect, thoughtfulness and loving literature depends on having high quality books for the students. Your donations will contribute to this class, my neighboring 5th grades with whom I share books and students for the next several years who will use the class set. Everybody loves good fiction when they find it.
