Fantastic Fastpitch Softball

Help me give my students the benefits of sports participation with safe, reliable equipment. Our softball program does not receive any monies for equipment. The school only has money to pay two coaches and travel costs.

My Students

Everyone thinks of Arizona as a desert, but we are lucky and fortunate to live in the cool mountains. We are near the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. Our little town has the population of about 21000 people.

There are about 400 students at our school with a variety of cultures and many of our families suffer from having a low income.

Our community has suffered some hardships over the past couple of years. Our town was evacuated because of a wildfire and a plane crashed into our high school, causing lots of damage. We had to close our elementary school and combine it with another school due to budget cuts and financial hardships. This increased class sizes. Last year we had a bad rain storm that flooded some of our buildings. Several teaching positions were not filled due to the budget cuts. We also have had several suicides that were devastating to our small community.

As all Arizonians know, Arizona teachers are some of the lowest paid and the state budget does not provide enough for our schools and classrooms. I have taught for over 33 years and I have finally gotten a raise.

My Project

Softball teaches and allows young girls to experience more than just striking people out and hitting a home run. But SPORTS have the ability to teach us so much more than what meets the eye.

Having safe & reliable helmets would enhance this positive experience for these 7th and 8th grade girls.

There are so many things to learn through sports. Girls can learn to work with others which is an important life skill. It emphasizes the importance to practice and work hard work. It teaches young girls a combination of failing and winning.
