Our school is an arts school. The students are gifted in visual and performing arts. They are motivated and enthusiastic about learning, and they make connections between what we study and their own areas of interest. They enjoy being active and creative.
Since they are visual and performing arts students, they bring many special talents to class.
As an English teacher, I have many opportunities to draw on their talents. My students love to express themselves through art, music, drama, and writing. They come from all over the area.
My Project
For my Creative Writing class, we begin by studying flash fiction and short stories. While reading flash fiction in class, my students read short story collections outside of class with their book groups. They then meet every week to discuss the short stories.
We also use the short stories as inspiration for our own writing.
Short stories are perfect for helping aspiring writers learn about character development, a focused plot, and a direct writing style. After reading the collections, students write their own stories inspired by a character, theme, or writing strategy used by their author. They then share the stories with the rest of the class as a way to introduce the stories to other students, and to explore their own writing styles.
