My Students

At the end of the school year, I want to to empower students through art. I want them to have an appreciation for the arts and for them to build self-confidence through the arts. It is my ultimate goal for them to be exposed to various artists, styles, cultures, and mediums.

My students come from a very low-income, inner city area.

Eighty-eight percent of the students at my school are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. Most of our students have very rough home lives and come to school every single day with baggage. They are in need of even the most basic things such as food and clothing. Our students desperately need art. It is their therapy!

My Project

My students will be learning about the famous artist, Wayne Thiebaud. Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter who is well known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects- pies, lipsticks, paint cans, ice cream cones, etc. We will begin this lesson with a Powerpoint and video that introduces the students to the artist and his work. We will then read the children's book, "Counting with Wayne Thiebaud" by Susan Goldman Rubin. We will discuss the art terms of coil, three-dimensional, scultpture, form, and pop art. Students will then have the opportunity to create their very own Wayne Thiebaud inspired lollipop sculptures using model magic and watercolor.

I have never taught this lesson before and am really excited to introduce it to my students.

My students love learning about famous artists. I know that they will absolutely love learning about Wayne Thiebaud and creating these lollipop sculptures!
