Family Reading to Promote Literacy at Your Library!

My students need 2 copies of several popular young adult novels, either a listening cd of the novel or the movie of each, portable dvd players and teacher-guided activities to send home.

My Students

Our students come from a once-thriving coal-mining community that has been devastated by the loss of income and industry. With over 82% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, these children are in great need of a high-quality education. Education and shared resources will be their ticket out of poverty.

Parental involvement is a key component to helping struggling students succeed.

In order to involve our parents in the education of their children, we must be creative! One way we can get parents involved is to make learning fun for them and their child.

My Project

To promote parent involvement, I would like to create a crate of popular junior high paperback books to use throughout the entire school year. There will be 2 copies of each title. One copy will be for the child and the other for the significant adult in their life. They will read the chapter book together.

For students who do not read on the grade level of the book, there will be audio books available for them to listen to the book.

After finishing the book, there will be teacher-guided activities for the parent and child to complete. Once those are reviewed, the child will then take home the movie for them to watch.

Portable video players will be available for them to check out if they do not have the means in their home to watch a movie. After reading and watching, the parent and child will fill out a form to compare the book to the movie. The child will receive recognition and extra points for completing the take-home book project.
